Sweden urged to increase support for Ukraine

Discussions at a recent panel hosted by the think tank Fri Värld have highlighted the urgent need for increased financial and material support for Ukraine. Participants emphasized that as the conflict becomes more brutal and costly, Sweden and Europe must step up to address both military and civilian requirements.

Gunnar Hökmark, chairman of Fri Värld, called for at least one or two new Swedish support packages within the current year. Economist Anders Åslund noted that Ukraine’s primary needs are currently financial, specifically to facilitate domestic weapon production and to compensate for Russian attempts to destabilize the Ukrainian economy.

Further proposals include utilizing the approximately 2,000 billion SEK in frozen Russian assets currently held in Europe to fund Ukrainian needs. There are also calls to use international court rulings to seize Russian assets as compensation for the looting of property in Crimea. While the current Swedish military support framework stands at 40 billion SEK per year, experts suggest that existing European budget support may be insufficient to counter ongoing economic attacks.
