Sweden’s Green Party proposes permanent ban on teenager deportations
Sweden’s Green Party has submitted a formal proposal to parliament seeking an immediate and permanent halt to the deportation of teenagers and young adults. Annika Hirvonen, the party’s parliamentary group leader, stated the initiative was introduced because young people cannot afford to wait for potential government formation processes to conclude.
The proposal includes four primary measures: a permanent ban on deporting teenagers and young adults, the reinstatement of provisions regarding ‘particularly distressing circumstances,’ amendments to the Aliens Act to allow previously deported youth to return to Sweden, and changes to university funding to grant those who grew up in Sweden the same right to free higher education as citizens.
According to Hirvonen, the Centre Party and the Left Party have already pledged support for the initiative, though the position of the Social Democratic Party remains unconfirmed. The submission must undergo review by the Social Insurance Committee before being presented to parliament.
