Sweden's red-green parties agree on law to limit deportations of young adults

Red-green political parties in Sweden have reached an agreement regarding a proposed law intended to limit the deportation of young adults. The legislation aims to grant residence permits for an additional 13 months to specific individuals who arrived in Sweden as minors with their families and received residence permit rejections on or after July 20, 2021.

To qualify, individuals must maintain family ties in Sweden and must not have intentionally avoided contact with authorities following a rejection. The law will exclude those being deported due to criminal activity or those found to have led a dishonest lifestyle by judicial or administrative decision.

Maria Mindhammar, Director-General of the Swedish Migration Agency, stated she is awaiting formal documentation from the parliamentary committee before deciding whether to temporarily pause deportations. While the agency previously paused certain cases as a discretionary measure, the new law seeks to provide a formal legal framework. The exact number of people affected is currently unclear, though representatives suggest the group is larger than previous measures but not in the thousands.
