Swedish agriculture sees new methane-reducing feed and biogas developments

Developments in Swedish agricultural technology and sustainability are highlighted through new feed additives and energy solutions. Volta Greentech has introduced Lome, a feed additive containing bromoform. The company claims Lome can reduce methane emissions from cattle by up to 50 percent and improve feed utilization by 5 percent. The product is currently in the final stages of the EFSA application process, primarily for beef cattle, and requires further research for dairy use. This positions Lome as a potential competitor to Bovaer, which has faced scrutiny following reports of issues in Danish dairy herds.

In energy production, a new biogas facility has been commissioned at the Olof Lars farm in Tvååker. Developed by the Lindeberg brothers in collaboration with Gårdsystem and Demeca, the plant utilizes farm manure and discarded roughage to produce electricity and heat. The facility features two 2,800 cubic meter reactors and provides the capability for island mode operation, enhancing energy security during grid disruptions.

Additionally, agricultural advisors emphasize the importance of precise feed analysis. Utilizing specialized drilling tools to sample silage, producers can optimize feed rations to increase milk yields and reduce concentrate costs by an estimated 1,000–1,500 SEK per cow annually.
