Swedish civil minister urged to address lagging SDK rollout in state agencies

Sweden’s civil minister Erik Slottner has called for a faster rollout of the Secure Digital Communication (SDK) service, which enables the safe exchange of sensitive data between municipalities, regions and government bodies. The presidents of the Swedish Association of Local Governments and Regions (SKR) responded, noting that while 218 of 290 municipalities and all 21 regions have begun or completed SDK connections, only eight state agencies have done so.

SKR criticized Slottner for not acknowledging the limited progress among the state agencies and for singling out local authorities. They urged the minister to consider the full picture before blaming municipalities and to continue dialogue with the Digital Administration Agency (DIGG) to support the remaining agencies. As SKR’s Anders Henriksson put it, “Ett tips till civilministern är att inte kasta sten i glashus” – a tip to the civil minister not to throw stones in a glass house.

The association highlighted that more than 600 distinct information flows in social services could be secured through SDK, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive, nation‑wide deployment for reliable public‑sector communication.
