Swedish forestry policy debates ownership and conservation

In Sweden, debates regarding forestry management and ownership rights are intensifying. The Christian Democrats (Kristdemokraterna) have proposed significant reforms to strengthen private forest owners' rights. Their platform includes the gradual sale of 30,000 hectares of productive forest land by Sveaskog annually to encourage private investment and long-term stewardship. Additionally, they advocate for the ability to review and potentially revoke nature reserves if the original conservation purpose can no longer be met due to environmental changes like storms or insect infestations.

Parallel to these political proposals, a survey conducted by Verian for the WWF indicates a shift in sentiment among private forest owners. The study reveals that approximately one-third of private forest owners are interested in transitioning to continuous cover forestry (hyggesfritt skogsbruk), and 40 percent believe the proportion of such forestry should increase in Sweden. The WWF emphasizes that private owners are key actors in nature restoration and biodiversity conservation, noting that many owners express concern regarding the impact of climate change on their forests over the next decade.
