Swedish local politics focus on tax cuts and elderly care

Local political debates in Sweden are currently focused on municipal budgets, elderly care, and the potential impact of upcoming elections.

In Örnsköldsvik, a tax reduction of 15 öre has been implemented, which equates to approximately 20 million SEK in reduced municipal revenue. Critics argue that these tax cuts, championed by the Alliance, may necessitate budget reductions in elderly care, with projected cuts of 13 million SEK this year and 26 million SEK next year.

In Västerås, the political landscape is being shaped by decisions to phase out assisted living services to save 18 million SEK. This policy change is expected to increase monthly costs for pensioners by roughly 4,400 SEK. Analysts suggest that the large demographic of elderly voters could significantly influence the election outcome, potentially allowing the Sweden Democrats (SD) to secure a larger number of mandates and influence policy regarding elderly care.
