Swedish police report surge in school threat alerts

Swedish police report a significant increase in alerts regarding threats against schools following the attack on Brinellskolan in Fagersta. Susanna Bellander, the national coordinator for counter-terrorism and extremism, described the rise in reports as “tangible.”

These alerts stem from various sources, including relatives expressing concern for loved ones and individuals reacting to content observed online. Experts suggest that increased societal vigilance and the online glorification of perpetrators contribute to this trend. School security specialist Lena Ljungdahl noted that intensive media coverage of suspects can inadvertently trigger others, as perpetrators often seek to achieve an effect through intimidation. While many incidents may not result in actual violence, the digital subcultures surrounding these actions continue to pose a concern for authorities.
