Sweden's highways see accidents, wildlife warnings and midsummer traffic jams

Swedish traffic authority Trafikverket reported numerous incidents on major highways, including stopped cars blocking lanes on E4, E18 and road 255, as well as collisions on roads 76, 288 and 255. Wildlife alerts were issued after elk (corzos) crossed protective barriers on the E4 and E20, prompting drivers to exercise caution.

During the midsummer weekend, long queues formed on the Öland Bridge, described as mile‑long, while fatal accidents occurred elsewhere: an elderly couple died after being rear‑ended on road 40 near Borås, and a motorcyclist later succumbed to injuries near Länna, Stockholm. Despite these events, Trafikverket characterised overall traffic flow as normal.

The combined effect of vehicle breakdowns, road collisions and wildlife presence contributed to temporary disruptions across Sweden’s road network, with authorities urging motorists to remain vigilant and treat fellow drivers as friends.
