Swedish highway incidents and traffic disruptions
Overview
From early June through early August 2026 Sweden’s major road network has been repeatedly affected by wildlife encounters, vehicle breakdowns, oil spills and occasional collisions.
June saw oil spills on the E4 near Väderstad and on the northern E10, while deer and elk warnings were issued for the E4, E18, E20, E22 and regional routes. A bus‑bridge collision at Beckershov roundabout and a surge in A‑tractor traffic added to the mix.
Mid‑June to mid‑July traffic slowed on the E4, E18 and several secondary roads as stationary cars, multi‑vehicle crashes and fallen trees blocked lanes. Elk movements on the E4 (Kalix‑Näsbyn, Mjösundet‑Hemberget) and deer on the E18 and E22 prompted temporary speed reductions.
July 10‑11 brought a series of single-vehicle accidents and lane blockages on the E4, road 919 and road 50, while an elk‑vehicle collision was reported on Road 27. Late July saw further disruptions including a stalled passenger car on the E4 northbound toward Uppsala, a broken vehicle on the E18 toward Stockholm, and fallen trees blocking road 1126.
In early August, authorities warned of a deer near the Draget junction on the E18 and a stationary car on the same highway, reported a serious accident on road 799, noted a truck stuck under the Beckershov bridge, and recorded a container fall on the E22 at Kårtorp. On 5 August, a truck struck wildlife on the E4 between Linköping Väst and Mantorp. On 9 August, warnings were issued for moose on the E4 between Pitsund S and Lappnäset, as well as between Jävre N and Högsböle. Other issues included a stationary vehicle on road 97 and an overflowing road on road 744.
