Swedish unions threaten strikes over pension and working hour disputes
Swedish labor unions LO and Kommunal are escalating tensions with employers over pension and working conditions. A potential strike could affect approximately two million employees and 60,000 companies if current agreements expire on December 1 without a resolution.
A central point of contention is the age limit for occupational pension contributions. While the general retirement age has risen to 67, current SAF-LO pension accruals typically cease at 65. LO is demanding the removal of these age limits so that employees who continue working can continue accruing pension benefits. Additionally, unions are seeking improved insurance terms regarding sickness, workplace injuries, and parental leave.
In the public sector, Kommunal is pushing for reduced working hours under the banner of ‘women’s working hours,’ aiming to align schedules in municipal and regional roles with those in male-dominated industrial sectors. IF Metall has indicated readiness to support these efforts with strike action. However, some observers have expressed skepticism regarding Kommunal’s negotiation tactics, citing historical precedents where central wage protections were lost in favor of local negotiations.
