Swedish labor union pension and working condition disputes

Overview

Swedish labor unions, including LO, PTK, and Kommunal, are escalating disputes with employers over occupational pensions, insurance, and working conditions. A primary point of contention is the age at which pension contributions and transition insurances cease; unions argue that while the state-mandated retirement age is 67, employer contributions currently stop at 65, potentially causing long-term financial losses for workers.

In addition to pension and injury insurance disputes, the conflict has expanded to include demands for reduced working hours in the public sector. Kommunal is seeking to align municipal and regional schedules with industrial sectors, a move that IF Metall has indicated it may support through strike action.

If new collective agreements are not reached by the December 1 deadline, the peace obligation will expire. Such a development could lead to strikes affecting approximately two million employees and 60,000 companies.
