Swine flu cases rise across multiple Indian states

India is experiencing a seasonal surge in Influenza A (H1N1), commonly known as swine flu, with notable cases reported in several states. In Jharkhand, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) identified eight positive cases in August alone. Dr. Ashok, the head of RIMS’s Microbiology Department, noted that the infection may be spreading due to inter-state travel and advised caution without panic.

In Himachal Pradesh, the Kangra district has seen an increase in cases, with seven new reports in a two-day period and over 33 cases detected in the last six months. Health officials in the region stated that while cases are rising, there is currently no evidence of a full-scale outbreak.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a public health advisory regarding the seasonal rise during the monsoon. The IMA warned against self-medicating with antibiotics and urged individuals to seek medical attention for severe symptoms. Surveillance by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that the circulating virus is the seasonal H1N1 strain, with no novel genetic mutations detected. Significant case numbers have also been recorded in Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal.
