Swiss glacier reveals 1963 aircraft wreckage

The melting of the Hüfifirn Glacier in the Swiss canton of Uri has revealed the wreckage of an aircraft that crashed in 1963. The remains were discovered by a local hiker, who alerted the authorities.

A recovery operation involving the Uri Cantonal Police, mountain units of the Swiss Air Force, and private companies successfully retrieved approximately 250 kilograms of lightweight metal debris. While the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) has not yet definitively identified the aircraft due to the absence of major components like the engine, officials believe it is the plane reported missing in 1963.

Authorities noted that during the 1960s, technical limitations made it difficult to recover wreckage from such inaccessible alpine locations. The discovery is part of a growing trend of historical remains being exposed by receding glaciers due to global warming and rising temperatures in the Alps.
