Swiss Army Unprepared for War Due to Logistical Gaps and Heavy Import Reliance

A report from the Swiss Federal Financial Supervisory Authority warns that the Swiss Army is not ready for potential armed conflicts. Critical logistical shortcomings – including possible interruptions in ammunition, fuel and spare‑part supplies – could quickly jeopardise operations. The report highlights a lack of coordination between the defence ministry (ArmaSuisse), the logistics contractor RUAG and civilian structures, which would weaken the entire supply chain in a crisis.

The army relies on imported weapons and equipment for more than 90% of its arsenal. Upgrading the logistics chain is estimated to cost up to 10 billion Swiss francs, a sum not currently available in the defence budget. Delays in the delivery of Patriot missile systems and F‑35A fighter jets, caused by U.S. prioritisation of supplies for Ukraine, further exacerbate the readiness gap, with additional costs of about $1.3 billion reported.

Switzerland’s unique militia model, based on compulsory male service and part‑time reservists, adds complexity to maintaining a fully equipped and coordinated force under the current constraints.
