Swiss military readiness and procurement challenges

The Swiss Army is facing significant readiness challenges due to logistical gaps and a heavy reliance on imported equipment. A report from the Swiss Federal Financial Supervisory Authority warned that the military is unprepared for potential armed conflicts, noting that more than 90% of its arsenal is imported. Critical vulnerabilities include potential interruptions in the supply of ammunition, fuel, and spare parts, alongside a lack of coordination between the defense ministry, logistics contractors, and civilian structures.

These logistical issues are compounded by delays in major acquisition projects. Specifically, the delivery of U.S.-made Patriot missile systems has been delayed into the 2030s as the United States prioritizes supplies for other allies, such as Ukraine. In response to these delays and rising costs, the Federal Office for Defense Procurement is exploring alternative air defense options. Potential candidates include the French-Italian Eurosam consortium’s SAMP/T NG system or a combination of European systems and South Korean technology to ensure faster delivery.
