Swiss military readiness and air defense procurement

The Swiss Army continues to face significant readiness challenges due to logistical gaps and a heavy reliance on imported equipment. A report from the Swiss Federal Financial Supervisory Authority warned that the military is unprepared for potential armed conflicts, noting that more than 90% of its arsenal is imported. Critical vulnerabilities include potential interruptions in the supply of ammunition, fuel, and spare parts, alongside a lack of coordination between the defense ministry, logistics contractors, and civilian structures.

These logistical issues are compounded by delays in major acquisition projects. Specifically, the delivery of U.S.-made Patriot missile systems has been delayed into the early 2030s, with current estimates suggesting an arrival around 2032. This delay of five to seven years is attributed to U.S. government reprioritization and inflation, which has also driven the Patriot system’s costs from an original 2 billion to approximately 3.7 billion Swiss francs.

To address the security gap created by the Patriot delays, Armasuisse has completed its evaluation for a second long-range air defense system, known as Bodluv GR 2. The Swiss Federal Office for Defense Procurement confirmed that military and industrial assessments of submitted offers are now finished. The French-Italian company Eurosam, which produces the SAMP/T NG system, is considered the frontrunner. The SAMP/T NG system utilizes Aster 30 B1NT missiles and is capable of detecting targets at ranges exceeding 350km and engaging aerodynamic targets at over 150km. This preference aligns with the Federal Council’s intent to prioritize European-made defense equipment. The final decision regarding the specific system type now rests with the Swiss Federal Council.
