Swiss authorities approve partial wolf regulation in Valais

The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) has granted permission for the partial regulation of two wolf packs in the Canton of Valais. This decision allows for the removal of two-thirds of the pups born this year from the Nendaz-Isérables and Les Toules packs.

The measures, signed by Christophe Darbellay, came into effect on September 18, 2026, and remain valid until January 31, 2027. These actions are part of a proactive wolf population management strategy for the 2026-2027 period, aimed at minimizing conflicts in areas where wolves have preyed on livestock.

In addition to the approved partial regulation, the Canton of Valais has applied for the complete removal of three specific packs: Nanz, Augstbord, and Réchy-Anniviers. As of September 17, 2026, there are eleven wolf packs residing in Valais, but the remaining packs do not currently meet the criteria for proactive regulation.
