Swiss Bishops Conference deplores excommunication of bishops ordained by Society of St. Pius X

The Swiss Bishops Conference (SBK/CVS) issued a statement expressing deep regret over a decree from the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The decree classifies the episcopal ordinations performed on 1 July 2026 in Écône by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X as a schismatic act, imposing automatic excommunication on the participating bishops and newly ordained clerics.

The conference reaffirmed its loyalty to the Pope and the unity of the Catholic Church, urging prayers for reconciliation and offering pastoral support to those wishing to return to full communion. It noted that decades of papal and ecclesial efforts to restore full communion with the fraternity have been set back by the unauthorized ordinations.
