Switzerland adopts climate adaptation strategy for 2026–2031

The Swiss Federal Council has approved a revised climate change adaptation strategy and action plan for the period 2026–2031. This initiative follows reports that average annual temperatures in Switzerland have risen by nearly three degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, increasing the nation's vulnerability to extreme weather.

The strategy identifies 30 priority areas and includes 56 specific measures designed to protect the population, infrastructure, and natural resources. Key objectives include reducing heat exposure in urban areas, preserving water supplies, strengthening protection against natural hazards, and improving the resilience of agriculture, forests, ecosystems, and transport infrastructure.

Specific measures involve the creation of national heat maps, the development of drought monitoring systems, and the establishment of an expertise center for climate-related health risks. The plan also addresses workplace safety during extreme heat, the protection of water quality, and the adaptation of Rhine River navigation to drier summers. Additionally, the strategy aims to improve early warning systems and research regarding food security and animal health.
