Switzerland and Liechtenstein implement EU's 20th sanctions package against Russia

Switzerland and Liechtenstein have moved to complete the implementation of the European Union’s 20th sanctions package against Russia.

In Switzerland, the Federal Council adopted amendments to the Ukraine Ordinance, which entered into force on August 20, 2026. These updates include expanded goods and trade restrictions, new shipping and liquefied natural gas (LNG) related measures, and the introduction of anti-circumvention tools. The revisions also aim to strengthen legal protections for Swiss entities against Russian countermeasures.

Similarly, the Liechtenstein government announced on August 25, 2026, that it is implementing the remaining measures of the EU package. This includes transaction bans for Russian crypto-service providers and new service prohibitions regarding icebreakers and LNG tankers. Liechtenstein is also activating an anti-circumvention instrument to prevent the export of sensitive goods via third countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, and is enhancing legal protections for domestic companies against abusive litigation in Russia.
