Switzerland and Liechtenstein sanctions against Russia

Switzerland and Liechtenstein have implemented the European Union’s 20th sanctions package against Russia, effective in late August 2026.

In Switzerland, the Federal Council adopted measures targeting Russia’s energy, financial, and trade sectors. Key energy restrictions include service prohibitions for liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers, icebreakers, and Russian-based LNG terminals, alongside a ban on selling tankers to Russia. To prevent evasion, Switzerland activated an anti-circumvention tool that bans the export of sensitive goods to Kyrgyzstan and restricts imports that generate significant revenue for Russia. Financial measures include banning the use of Russian platforms for crypto-asset transfers and prohibiting support for the development of the digital ruble.

Liechtenstein followed with similar actions, implementing transaction bans for Russian crypto-service providers and service prohibitions regarding LNG tankers and icebreakers. Like Switzerland, Liechtenstein activated anti-circumvention instruments to prevent sensitive goods from being exported via third countries and introduced measures to protect domestic companies from abusive litigation in Russia.
