Switzerland debates nationwide ban on noisy fireworks
A debate is intensifying in Switzerland regarding a national initiative to ban fireworks that primarily generate noise. Proponents, including animal welfare organizations and various political figures, argue that loud explosions cause significant stress, injuries, and death among pets, livestock, and wildlife. Additionally, they highlight the environmental impact of noise, fine dust, and litter left in agricultural fields.
While there is general consensus that purely noise-driven firecrackers are unnecessary, opinions diverge on whether a nationwide ban is required. Supporters seek a uniform federal regulation to replace the current patchwork of local and cantonal rules. The initiative does not propose an absolute ban; instead, it targets noise-producing items while allowing quieter alternatives like volcanoes. Large-scale, public fireworks displays could still be permitted through cantonal exceptions.
Federal Councilor Albert Rösti has expressed sympathy for animal welfare concerns but is tasked with representing the Federal Council's position, which opposes the initiative. This puts him in a complex position, as the Swiss People's Party (SVP) has issued a 'no' recommendation despite early polling suggesting approximately 53 to 70 percent of the electorate may support the measure.
