Swiss fireworks initiative campaign

Overview

A campaign has launched in Switzerland ahead of a November 29 national vote regarding the ‘Fireworks Initiative’. Supported by over 137,000 signatures, the proposal seeks a constitutional amendment to ban the sale and use of noise-producing fireworks to protect animals, livestock, and wildlife from stress and injury.

Proponents, led by Swiss Animal Protection (STS), argue the measure is a compromise that allows for silent pyrotechnics and permits cantonal exceptions for large-scale events of supra-regional importance. Marco Mettler of STS stated the goal is to “limit uncontrolled noise” rather than abolish National Day celebrations. Supporters also highlight the initiative’s potential to mitigate air pollution, litter, and fire risks.

Debate has intensified as supporters seek uniform federal regulation to replace the current patchwork of cantonal rules. While early polling suggests 53 to 70 percent of the electorate may support the measure, the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has issued a ‘no’ recommendation. Although Federal Councilor Albert Rösti has expressed sympathy for animal welfare concerns, the Federal Council officially opposes the initiative.

Recent polling by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation indicates 69 percent of voters support the ban. The initiative appears popular across the political spectrum, particularly among women. While the proposal targets loud fireworks in private settings, it would allow quieter alternatives like sparklers and fountains, and cantons could still grant exemptions for major events such as Swiss National Day and New Year’s Eve. Opponents, including the pyrotechnic industry, argue the measure threatens tradition and personal freedoms.
