Switzerland drops to fourth in global retirement index
According to the ‘Global Retirement Index 2026’ released by Natixis Investment Management, Switzerland has dropped to fourth place in the global ranking for retirees, down from third place last year and first place in 2024. Norway currently holds the top position, followed by Ireland and the Netherlands.
The index evaluates 44 countries based on four criteria: retirement finances, material well-being, health, and quality of life. While Switzerland ranks second in health—leading the world in life expectancy—and third in retirement finances, it saw a significant decline in material well-being, falling to 15th place. Factors cited for this decline include a strong Swiss franc, the UBS-CS merger, and labor market shifts resulting from US tariffs.
Globally, the report warns that retirement financial security is under increasing pressure due to aging populations, record-high national debt, and persistent inflation.
