Switzerland explores new air defense options amid US Patriot delays

Switzerland is reassessing its air defense strategy following delays and rising costs associated with the US-made Patriot system. Originally approved in 2021, the Patriot system's delivery dates have reportedly shifted into the 2030s as the United States prioritizes other allies due to the global security situation.

As a result, the Federal Office for Defense Procurement (armasuisse) is considering alternative solutions. The French-Italian Eurosam consortium's SAMP/T NG system has emerged as a primary candidate. This system is capable of intercepting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at altitudes of up to 30 kilometers. There is also potential interest in combining European systems with South Korean technology to ensure faster delivery.

Benedikt Roos, who assumed the role of Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces on January 1, 2026, faces significant challenges including rising threats in Europe, troop under-equipment, and difficulties in major acquisition projects. He has emphasized that the dangers facing Europe also directly impact Switzerland.
