Switzerland faces climate challenges in consumer habits and building efficiency

Climate change is impacting Switzerland in both consumer habits and infrastructure. A survey by Comparis reveals that the climate debate has a minimal influence on the purchasing and investment decisions of the Swiss population. Only 20 percent of respondents reported that climate issues affect their decisions, a significant decrease compared to the COVID-19 pandemic era. Notably, the percentage of people stating the debate has no influence has nearly doubled since 2019. This trend contrasts with official statistics, which show rising meat consumption and record-breaking passenger numbers at Zurich Airport.

Simultaneously, Switzerland’s Minergie-certified buildings are struggling with rising temperatures. Tenants in these energy-efficient structures are reporting overheating and humid indoor climates, with temperatures often exceeding 28 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Minergie Director Andreas Meyer Primavesi acknowledged that some buildings designed years ago were not built to withstand current climate models. In response, the association plans to tighten its energy and climate standards by 2027 to address these challenges.
