Switzerland faces environmental and health challenges from 2026 heatwave

The summer of 2026 in Switzerland has caused significant distress for both the population and the natural environment due to extreme heat and drought. A survey conducted by ‘20 Minuten’ and Tamedia reveals that 74 percent of the Swiss population found the summer to be very or rather burdensome, with 37 percent reporting physical health issues such as sleep disturbances or circulatory problems.

The survey highlights demographic disparities, noting that women and individuals in lower-income households reported higher levels of distress. Furthermore, 84 percent of respondents expressed concern regarding the impact of heat and dryness on Swiss nature and agriculture.

In the forestry sector, professionals like Urs Steck, a forester in Möhlin, report that heat and drought are severely affecting trees, particularly beech trees, which may lose stability and suffer branch breakage. To adapt to these changing conditions, forest management is shifting toward planting more drought-resistant species, such as oaks, to ensure long-term forest resilience.
