Switzerland fireworks initiative campaign launches ahead of vote
Proponents of the ‘Fireworks Initiative’ have launched a campaign ahead of a national vote scheduled for November 29. The initiative, backed by over 137,000 valid signatures, seeks to establish a nationwide ban on the sale and use of noise-producing fireworks through a constitutional amendment.
The movement is led by Swiss Animal Protection (STS), along with various animal welfare organizations, gamekeepers, and farmers. Supporters argue the measure is a compromise aimed at promoting respectful coexistence rather than an attack on tradition. Under the proposal, cantonal authorities could grant exceptions for events of supra-regional importance, and silent pyrotechnic products would remain permitted.
Marco Mettler, Managing Director of STS, stated that the initiative does not aim to abolish the August 1st National Day celebrations, but rather to limit uncontrolled noise. He emphasized that the goal is to ensure that celebrations do not negatively impact animals or others in the community.
