Switzerland reports 40,000 annual hiking accidents

A recent survey by the Swiss Safety Center (BFU) reveals that approximately 40,000 people are involved in hiking and mountain accidents in Switzerland annually, resulting in 45 deaths, primarily due to falls.

The data indicates a significant behavioral trend: nearly 70% of hikers have encountered difficult or intimidating passages, such as areas with high fall risks or dizzying heights. Despite feeling fear or uncertainty, more than two-thirds of these individuals choose to continue their journey rather than turning back. This tendency is notably more common among younger and less experienced hikers, whereas older and more experienced climbers are more likely to retreat when faced with danger.
