Mountain safety and accident trends in Switzerland

Switzerland is experiencing a significant rise in mountain-related incidents and accidents. Recent data shows that nearly 4,000 people required mountain rescue assistance over a one-year period, setting a new record for rescue operations.

Further analysis by the Swiss Safety Center (BFU) indicates that approximately 40,000 people are involved in hiking and mountain accidents annually, with 45 deaths reported, primarily caused by falls.

Experts and surveys highlight several contributing factors to these trends. Rescue teams attribute the surge to exhaustion, lack of preparation, and individuals overestimating their abilities, noting that social media content may encourage inexperienced people to attempt difficult routes. Behavioral data shows that nearly 70% of hikers encounter intimidating or high-risk passages, yet more than two-thirds choose to continue their journey despite feeling fear. This tendency to proceed despite danger is most prevalent among younger and less experienced hikers, while older and more experienced climbers are more likely to retreat when faced with danger.
