Switzerland to Tighten S‑Protection for Ukrainian Refugees, May Exclude Military‑Age Men

The Swiss Federal Council announced that it is reviewing the S‑protection status granted to Ukrainian refugees. The review, prompted by the war’s fifth year and a shortage of Ukrainian conscripts, could restrict or revoke the status for men of conscription age, limiting them to emergency aid only. The government expects a decision by the end of summer and plans to let cantons have greater autonomy in allocating social assistance.

If the change is implemented, up to 46,000 Ukrainian refugees could be affected, including about 8,000 in the canton of Zürich. The proposal aligns with ongoing discussions in the European Union about similar restrictions.
