Switzerland to vote on nationwide ban for noisy fireworks
Swiss citizens will vote on November 29 regarding a citizen-led initiative to restrict the sale and use of loud, disruptive fireworks. Supported by animal welfare and environmental groups, including Schweizer Tierschutz (STS), the proposal aims to reduce noise pollution, air pollution, litter, and the risk of fires and accidents.
According to a poll by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, 69 percent of voters support the ban. The initiative is popular across the political spectrum, particularly among women. The proposal does not seek a total ban on all pyrotechnics; instead, it targets loud fireworks in private settings while allowing quieter alternatives like sparklers and fountains.
Under the proposal, cantons could grant exemptions for major events such as Swiss National Day on August 1 and New Year’s Eve. While local authorities currently have the power to regulate fireworks, this initiative would establish uniform rules for the entire country. Opponents, including the Swiss People's Party and representatives from the pyrotechnic industry, argue the measure threatens tradition and personal freedoms.
