Switzerland's largest battery storage facility begins operations

Switzerland's largest battery storage facility has officially commenced operations in Gurtnellen, located in the canton of Uri. Developed by energy companies Axpo and Energie Uri, the project consists of two battery energy storage systems built in close proximity. The Axpo system provides 50 MW of power, while the Energie Uri system provides 8.4 MW.

Supplied by Fluence, the facility is designed to increase grid flexibility by temporarily storing surplus electricity from solar and wind sources to be fed back into the grid when required. Axpo's system is intended to serve the national market, whereas Energie Uri's system will focus on meeting the specific needs of the canton.

Hermann Epp, a member of the cantonal government, stated that the project transforms the industrial area into an ‘energy hub of national importance’ and serves as a practical demonstration of the energy transition. The project is also expected to bring technological expertise and secure local jobs within the Uri region.
