Sydney Airport safety: ATSB investigates four recent aviation incidents
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched formal investigations into four high-risk operational incidents at Sydney Airport occurring within a four-week period. These events involve runway incursions and taxiway near-misses involving multiple airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia.
Specific incidents include a July 27 near-collision between a QantasLink Dash 8 and a Qantas Boeing 737, and an August 9 event where a Jetstar Airbus A320 had to brake abruptly to avoid a towed Qatar Airways Boeing 777, resulting in a reported serious injury to a cabin crew member. More recent probes focus on an August 16 taxiway incident involving a Virgin Australia 737 and a Qantas 737, as well as an August 25 event where a Jetstar aircraft was directed toward a taxiing Bombardier Dash 8 due to incomplete traffic information.
The cluster of incidents has prompted concerns regarding air traffic control management and potential staffing shortages within the sector.
