Sydney Airport safety investigation expands after multiple aviation incidents

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched a formal investigation into a series of six safety incidents at Sydney Airport occurring since late July. The investigation follows a pattern of runway incursions and loss of separation involving various airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia.

Recent incidents include an August 16 event where a Virgin Australia Boeing 737 had to brake to avoid a Qantas 737, and an August 25 event where a Jetstar Airbus A320 crew halted a pushback after realizing they lacked complete taxi information regarding a nearby Bombardier Dash 8.

Other notable incidents under investigation include a July 27 runway incursion where a Qantas Boeing 737 was authorized to cross an active runway while a Qantas Link Dash 8 was landing, and an August 9 emergency braking incident involving a Jetstar aircraft avoiding a Qatar Airways Boeing 777, which resulted in a crew member sustaining injuries.

The ATSB is currently collecting data, reviewing flight recordings, and interviewing air traffic controllers and flight crews to determine if common contributing factors exist across these events. A preliminary report is expected within six to eight weeks.
