Sydney Swans players suspended amid hotel sexual assault investigation

The Sydney Swans football club is facing a major crisis following an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne. Victoria Police’s Sexual Crimes Squad is actively investigating the incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 17. While no formal charges have been laid and the involved players deny criminal wrongdoing, the investigation has led to significant disciplinary action within the club.

Five Sydney Swans players—Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Riley Bice—have been suspended for the remainder of the AFL season. The club stated these suspensions were due to breaches of behavioral standards, including drinking and staying out late, rather than the criminal investigation itself. The club has categorically denied that any staff members were involved in the incident or present in the hotel room.

Legal developments are mounting as multiple law firms, including Slater and Gordon, are reportedly preparing civil claims on behalf of the women involved. Additionally, the Swans have reportedly provided audio of a conversation between three women to the AFL’s integrity unit to assist with the ongoing inquiry. The scandal has caused significant division among fans, with some threatening to walk out of upcoming matches at the SCG.
