Sydney Swans sexual assault investigation update

Overview

Victoria Police are investigating allegations of sexual assault involving Sydney Swans players following an incident at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne in August. The investigation involves three adult entertainers and follows an incident where one woman reportedly sought assistance after an asthma attack. While the club has suspended five players—Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, and James Jordon—for the remainder of the 2026 season due to breaches of conduct standards, police updates have clarified the status of those involved. Detectives are now treating Riley Bice solely as a witness rather than a suspect, narrowing the investigation’s focus to the other four players. Detectives recently traveled to New South Wales to conduct interviews. Police stated they believe they have identified all individuals who were in the hotel room at the time of the alleged incident and are not seeking anyone further. No charges have been laid, and the players have engaged separate legal counsel. Police have also seized an audio recording from a Melbourne residence that reportedly contains detailed recollections of the events in the hotel room and lobby. Following the conclusion of the season, the five suspended players returned to the club this week for exit interviews and to address coaching staff and teammates. Despite their suspensions, the Sydney Swans confirmed that Heeney, Warner, Blakey, Jordon, and Bice remain eligible for the club’s best and fairest award, the Bob Skilton Medal. However, the players have requested not to attend the awards ceremony scheduled for October 1 at Sydney Town Hall, a request the club granted to ensure the event is not “overshadowed by the recent controversy.”
