Syria begins transporting imported petroleum to Iraq via Baniyas

Syria has commenced the transport of imported petroleum products to Iraq via the Baniyas oil terminal. This initiative is part of a renewable three-month agreement aimed at securing energy supplies amid maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Ahmed Qubbaji, deputy chief executive for transportation and storage at the Syrian Petroleum Company, the first shipment involved 57 tanker trucks moving through the al-Tanf crossing. The company aims to scale operations to approximately 200 tankers per day. The Qatar-based firm UCC is purchasing the fuel from international suppliers, while Syrian authorities manage the transport in exchange for transit fees.

In addition to importing fuel, Iraq is utilizing this corridor to export crude oil, helping to bypass the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, between 1,000 and 1,200 Iraqi oil tankers are reportedly transiting through Syria daily. Furthermore, Damascus and Baghdad are in the final stages of negotiating a formal contract to develop the Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline.
