Syria enters reconstruction phase following U.S. sanctions relief
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has announced the beginning of a new phase of reconstruction and development for Syria following the removal of international sanctions. Speaking at the opening of the 63rd Damascus International Fair, al-Sharaa stated that the country aims to restore its role as an economic hub and a trade corridor connecting Eastern and Western markets.
The President described the fair as a window to the world and a meeting point for international investors and companies. He emphasized that the removal of obstacles marks the start of a long journey toward national renaissance and economic stability.
This shift follows an announcement by the U.S. Department of the Treasury on Monday, which removed Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. This move fulfills commitments made by U.S. President Donald Trump to provide sanctions exemptions. Syria had been on the list since 1979 during the era of Hafez al-Assad. The 63rd edition of the Damascus International Fair is operating under the slogan ‘Syria shines again’ to attract foreign investment and stimulate the national economy.
