Syria faces economic stress as fuel price protests erupt
Syria is facing significant economic instability following the fall of the Assad regime. Recent large-scale protests were triggered by a government decision to increase fuel prices by up to 40%, a move officials attributed to a global energy crisis linked to the Iran war.
In a departure from the previous 54-year police state, the transitional government allowed demonstrators to disperse without the typical use of violence or imprisonment. State media also broadcast the protests rather than dismissing them as foreign-staged disinformation. While the government responded to the unrest by walking back some price hikes and summoning the energy minister to parliament, analysts warn that these actions do not address the underlying cost-of-living crisis.
The economic situation remains dire, with World Bank assessments indicating that two-thirds of Syrians live below the lower middle-income poverty line, surviving on less than $3.65 per day.
