Syria faces widespread protests over rising cost of living

Protests have erupted across Syria as citizens express anger over a growing cost-of-living crisis. Demonstrators recently blocked roads and burned tires to protest the government's decision to increase fuel prices, marking the largest display of public discontent since Ahmed al-Sharaa assumed the presidency two years ago.

Following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, the transitional government led by al-Sharaa has struggled to revive a collapsed economy damaged by years of conflict and isolation. While the transition brought new freedoms, many Syrians report that financial stability has not materialized, with the costs of basic necessities and utilities rising sharply.

In response to calls for further demonstrations, the government recently revoked the fuel price increase. However, citizens continue to express frustration, citing a disconnect between government policy and the economic reality of the population.
