Syria-Lebanon border smuggling networks resume activity
Human smuggling networks have resumed activity along the Syrian-Lebanese border, according to military and political sources. Reports indicate increased movement through illegal crossings in the Akkar region, where individuals are crossing on foot or using agricultural vehicles to evade official checkpoints.
A Lebanese military source described these operations as “limited but continuous,” noting that the length and complex terrain of the 375-kilometer border make full control extremely difficult. While many individuals are reportedly workers seeking livelihoods in Lebanon, there are growing security concerns that these routes could be used to smuggle wanted individuals or serve as transit points for irregular migration toward Europe via the Mediterranean.
Local MP Jimmy Jabbour stated that smuggling has not ceased following recent political shifts in Syria and has, in some cases, increased. He emphasized that the phenomenon poses significant economic, social, and security risks, including the potential entry of militant groups. Jabbour called for a political solution involving the Cabinet or the Supreme Defense Council to complement military and judicial efforts.
