Syria postpones inaugural session of transitional parliament

Syrian authorities have delayed the first meeting of the new transitional parliament, which had been set for Monday. State television quoted an electoral official saying, “The convening of the first session of the people’s assembly has been postponed to a date to be determined later,” without providing a reason.

The parliament, formed after the toppling of President Bashar al‑Assad in December 2024, will have 210 members. Two‑thirds were selected by local committees beginning in October 2025, while President Ahmed al‑Sharaa appointed the remaining third – 70 members this week. Seats for the Druze‑majority Suwayda province remain vacant due to last year’s sectarian violence, and representatives from formerly Kurdish‑run north‑east areas were appointed after a deal to integrate Kurdish institutions. The body will serve a 30‑month term, draft an election law and prepare for a permanent constitution before the next popular vote.
