Syria is experiencing widespread protests following a government decree that sharply increased fuel prices. Diesel prices rose by 40 per cent, while petrol prices increased by up to 28 per cent. Additionally, household and industrial gas prices saw a 9 per cent hike. Demonstrations have erupted across multiple provinces, including Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Deraa. Protesters have blocked major transit routes, such as the highway connecting Damascus and Aleppo, and the M4 highway near Tal Tamr, which has stranded numerous oil tankers.

The Syrian Energy Ministry described the increases as a temporary measure necessitated by rising international procurement costs, transportation expenses, and maintenance work at the Baniyas refinery. The refinery's current shutdown has increased the nation's reliance on imported petroleum products.

In the Kurdish-dominated northeast, tensions are also rising regarding the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the national army and a government decree regarding the Kurdish language. While the decree makes Kurdish an official language of instruction, it only provides for three classes per week, sparking further discontent in cities like Qamishli and Hassakeh. These economic and political pressures come as the country struggles with a poverty rate estimated by the United Nations to be near 90 per cent.
