Syria implements fuel price hikes amid widespread protests
Syria has implemented significant fuel price increases, with diesel prices rising by 40 percent from 125 to 175 Syrian pounds per liter. Gasoline 95 octane saw a 28.3 percent increase, while gasoline 90 octane rose by approximately 25.9 percent. Domestic gas cylinder prices also increased by roughly 8.8 percent.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy attributed these hikes to exceptional increases in global procurement costs and rising shipping and insurance expenses. The ministry noted that the country relies heavily on imports, as local crude production of approximately 100,000 barrels per day only covers about one-third of the 300,000 to 325,000 barrels per day demand. Additionally, the Baniyas refinery has entered a two-month maintenance period, further increasing the need for imported refined products.
The price adjustments have triggered widespread protests across multiple provinces, including Aleppo, Idlib, Homs, Deir ez-Zor, Al-Hasakah, Raqqa, and the Damascus countryside. Demonstrators have blocked major roads, such as the M5 highway and the Deir ez-Zor-Aleppo road, and burned tires to express opposition. In response, members of the Syrian People's Assembly have requested an urgent hearing with the Minister of Energy to address the economic impact on citizens.
