Syria: Over 60,000 displaced persons supported in return to homes since January

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over 60,000 internally displaced Syrians have received support to return to their homes since January. A significant acceleration in departures occurred during July and August, when 38,836 people left displacement sites, including 19,600 individuals assisted through facilitated-return mechanisms. During this two-month period, 130 displacement sites were inactivated.

Recent return efforts include a convoy of 263 families departing northern Syrian camps for home areas in southern Idlib, Hama, Aleppo, and Damascus provinces. This operation was organized under Presidential Decree No. 59 and coordinated by local social affairs directorates with support from UNHCR, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and other organizations. Another convoy consisting of 65 families (approximately 300 people) departed the Al-Rasm camp in Manbij for Maskana, Deir Hafer, and Raqqa.

In Deir Zour, 224 families have begun returning to their original towns and villages from various camps in the Al-Jazira region. These movements are part of the 'No Camps Vision' initiative, which aims to achieve a camp-free Aleppo by the end of 2026. While these returns indicate progress in humanitarian recovery and infrastructure rehabilitation, OCHA warned that the influx of returnees is placing increasing strain on the services and resources of the receiving communities.
