Syrian women's delegation participates in UN Women, Peace and Security Week
A formal delegation of Syrian women participated for the first time in the Women, Peace and Security Week at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The delegation included representatives from various government and legislative bodies, including Nahla Othman, Director of the Department of Expatriate and Refugee Affairs, and members of the People's Assembly and national commissions for transitional justice and missing persons.
During an open session of the UN Security Council, Nahla Othman delivered a statement addressing the challenges faced by Syrian women. She noted that over the past fourteen years, women have faced persecution and increased burdens rather than the protection envisioned by Security Council Resolution 1325. Othman highlighted the roles women have taken on in providing income, healthcare, and education, describing their experience as one of exceptional resilience and leadership.
The delegation also co-organized a side event with UN Women titled “Women in Shaping Transitional Justice and Searching for the Missing in Syria,” focusing on the fate of thousands of missing individuals. The participation included bilateral meetings with UN officials and representatives from member states.
