Syrian women's cultural and political engagement

Overview

Syria observed Syrian Women's Week through various cultural, educational, and artistic initiatives. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Arab Cultural Center, these events included a fine arts exhibition titled ‘Woman: Giving and Creativity’ in Damascus, psychological support workshops, and seminars regarding women's rights and political roles. Programming also reached regional areas such as Jaramana, Daraa, and Homs.

Later, a formal delegation of Syrian women participated in the Women, Peace and Security Week at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During a UN Security Council session, Nahla Othman, Director of the Department of Expatriate and Refugee Affairs, addressed the challenges and persecution faced by women over the previous fourteen years. The delegation also co-organized a side event with UN Women focused on transitional justice and the fate of missing individuals in Syria.
