Tab Baldwin and Ateneo fined P4.9M for work permit violations

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has found former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and the university administratively liable for work permit violations. The ruling stems from violations of Article 40 of the Labor Code regarding the requirement for foreign nationals to secure an Alien Employment Permit (AEP).

Baldwin admitted during a hearing that he did not possess an AEP while coaching various teams since 2013. While legal counsel argued Baldwin was exempt due to his permanent visa status, DOLE officials noted the absence of a required Certificate of Exemption (COE).

As a result, Baldwin was ordered to pay a P10,000 fine for the lack of an AEP. Additionally, a solidary fine of P4.9 million was imposed against both Baldwin and Ateneo, representing a P10,000 daily penalty for 490 days worked without the necessary certificate. Sources indicate that Baldwin and Ateneo are considering legal remedies and an appeal regarding the decision.
