Sanctions against Tab Baldwin and Ateneo de Manila

Overview

Following the June 8 drowning of Ateneo players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) imposed a “perpetual, unappealable ban” on former Ateneo de Manila head coach Tab Baldwin. The sanction prohibits Baldwin from any role or entry to UAAP venues. While Baldwin and several staff members face reckless imprudence charges, the UAAP cleared the Ateneo men’s basketball team to compete in Season 89, provided the university reassesses its organizational structure and athlete protection measures.

Separately, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) found Baldwin and Ateneo administratively liable for work permit violations. Baldwin admitted to coaching without an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) since 2013. Consequently, Baldwin was ordered to pay a P10,000 fine, while Baldwin and the university were issued a solidary fine of P4.9 million for working without a required Certificate of Exemption. Both parties are reportedly considering legal appeals regarding the DOLE decision.
